Student Spotlight: Rachael Teeples

BIP Student Rachael Teeples and Instructor Heather Hardie surrounded by mums in a greenhouse

For 25 years, Rachael Teeples has made the Brunswick Interagency Program (BIP) her second home. Originally from Utah, she moved to Brunswick County after high school and quickly found her place at BIP. She began with Adult Basic Education classes, but her heart soon led her to the Brunswick Blooms Greenhouse and Special Olympics. Although she eventually “retired” from the team to spend more time in the greenhouse, Rachael continues to thrive where her passion for plants and people come together.

Today, Rachael works in the greenhouse as an employed student while continuing Adult Education classes at BIP and pursuing college-level Horticulture courses at BCC. Her instructor, Heather Hardie, recalls how Rachael stood out in her Plant Propagation class. “Rachael quickly became a class favorite,” said Hardie. “She has a wonderful personality, a great sense of humor, and she’s an excellent student. Rachael always turns in exceptional work, never misses class, and thrives in the greenhouse environment. Probably my favorite thing about Rachael is her humor—she has an unforgettable laugh that makes her a joy to be around.”

Rachael lives independently with her two cats, Tigger and Lucille. For her, the greenhouse is more than a workplace—it’s a stress reliever. “Whether my day is a good one or not, I channel my mood into caring for the plants and the greenhouse,” she says. “It’s my job, my hobby, and my way of helping people.”

She loves sharing her knowledge with shoppers at BIP’s bi-annual plant sales, answering questions about sunlight, soil, watering, and even which plants are safe for pets. Her ultimate goal is to do her absolute best in the greenhouse and pass her knowledge along to others.

Beyond the greenhouse, Rachael enjoys the many activities and celebrations at BIP, especially Oktoberfest, the Halloween Costume Contest, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. These events, along with her daily work, bring her community joy and purpose.

For Rachael, BIP isn’t just a program—it’s a lifelong journey of growth, friendship, and learning.
